Leadership Lab
Leadership Lab is a structured peer-learning experience that pairs leaders across California in a shared leadership partnership model.

At the heart of the First 5 Leadership Institute is the belief that leadership is a journey shaped by community, continuous learning, and shared purpose.
Our leadership development ecosystem grows with you, offering multiple pathways for engagement and development over time – ensuring that leaders at every stage have access to the support they need.
Leadership Lab is one of several interconnected offerings designed to build on one another, creating a cohesive and dynamic leadership experience across the First 5 Network.
What we ask of you
- Time Commitment: Meet with your Leadership Lab partner at least once per month for nine months (September - May).
- Engagement: Approach the partnership as a two-way exchange. Participants will offer and receive insight, feedback, and encouragement.
- Goals: Identify and track your personal leadership goals and reflect along the way.
- Partner Meetings: Four virtual goal pod meetings and three virtual full cohort meetings over nine months.
- Feedback: Participate in check-ins and surveys to help us strengthen and evolve the program.
- Organizational Support: Ensure your commission or supervisor supports your time commitment to the Lab.
What we provide to you
Connection Stipend
To make in-person connection easier, each participant’s First 5 Commission will receive a $100 stipend—which can be used for travel, meals, or other costs related to your Leadership Lab meetings.
Orientation Session
We kick off each program year with a Leadership Lab Orientation, designed to set you and your partner up for success.
Tools & Resources
You’ll receive access to reflection guides, conversation prompts, and check-in templates to support meaningful dialogue and growth.
Staff Support
The First 5 Association team will coordinate matching, troubleshoot issues, and host office hours for additional guidance.
Community Connection
Join other First 5 Leadership Institute convenings and learning opportunities to deepen relationships and expand your leadership network.
